چکیده

Lauren L. Murphy: The Effects of Viscosity and Subsurface Heterogeneity on a Brine Barrier Approach to DNAPL Remediation (Under the direction of Cass T. Miller) Dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are a long-term source of groundwater contamination. Difficulties of current remediation methods have led to the study of a novel brine barrier remediation technology (BBRT) which presents a solution to current limitations. This study utilized a mathematical model to advance understanding of BBRT at the macroscale. A subset of stochastic functions was employed to represent correlated random permeability fields and to asses their impacts on brine emplacement and brine removal efficiency. The injection of a highly viscous brine into the subsurface was seen to cause a decrease in permeability, leading to brine mounding around injection wells. For moderately heterogeneous domains, this behavior was able to be mitigated by the use of sufficiently low injection rates. However, local heterogeneities were shown to be the dominant factor in subsequent brine removal, emphasizing the importance of subsurface knowledge for accurate modeling and efficient implementation of BBRT.

EMSP Progress Report: Physics of DNAPL Migration and Remediation in the Presence of Heterogeneities

We are in the process of conducting well-controlled laboratory experiments to better understand the physics of DNAPL migration and remediation in the presence of heterogeneities. These experiments are being used to develop and test an upscaled percolation model, a new approach for modeling DNAPL migration. In addition, numerical simulators under current use in evaluating remediation techniques ...

High Stakes Require More Than Just Talk: What to Do About Corruption in Health Systems; Comment on “We Need to Talk About Corruption in Health Systems”

Reluctance to talk about corruption is an important barrier to action. Yet the stakes of not addressing corruption in the health sector are higher than ever. Corruption includes wrongdoing by individuals, but it is also a problem of weak institutions captured by political interests, and underfunded, unreliable administrative systems and healthcare delivery models. We ur...

About hundred years ago, Walton Hamilton, in a historical event tried to introduce an alternative approach to economics, known as institutional economics. He intended to show that the institutional economics is an extensive and comprehensive scientific paradigm that could unite the whole economics. In fact, this school of thought well succeeded to rule over the prestigious universities of the w...

Evaluating Seismic Effects on a Water Supply Network and Quantifying Post-Earthquake Recovery

This paper summarises the impact of major earthquakes, 2010–2011, on Christchurch’s water supply network and what recovery measures have been applied, what worked well, what did not and why. A number of issues related to the open nature of the Christchurch water supply network were identified during earthquakes. It was difficult to manage large water supply pressure zones during the post-earthq...
